Why is Behavioral EQ so Important?

What Charles Darwin discovered was the early research behind understanding the value of the Behavioral Emotional Quotient. I want to share with you why I believe it is important as a Leader to understand your own Behavioral EQ. This will be a quick overview addressing the main components. If you want to explore this in more detail, please contact me and we can discuss what path you may want to take to learn more.

In the study of emotional intelligence, we learn that we have 2 brain systems. One that is fast, developed in prehistoric times to keep us safe by making a quick assessment of the danger we were facing. The trouble with that system is that it has a higher probability of being wrong than the slower system in our brain. The slower system is logical, more analytical, with a higher probability of being right. We have the ability to stop the fast system and choose the slower one. There is a right time for each brain system. Choose purposely.

We will start with Self Knowledge (the ability to identify and maintain awareness of your own emotions and how these influence behavior). The understanding of how others perceive you can only come from a multi-rater assessment, which I can offer you through my EQ training program. It provides you with an accurate place to start your journey. I pulled this excerpt from Chinwe Esimai's article titled, "Great Leadership Starts with Self- Awareness."

"Self-awareness has been cited as the most important capability for leaders to develop, according to the authors of “How To Become a Better Leader”. Successful leaders know where their natural inclinations lie and use this knowledge to boost those inclinations or compensate for them.

A study also found that self-awareness impacts companies’ bottom line. In a study of the stock performance of 486 publicly traded companies, Korn/Ferry International found that companies with strong financial performance tend to have employees with higher levels of self-awareness than poorly performing companies."

Next, we should have a Knowledge of others (the awareness of how others are feeling and experiencing). I thought I was pretty good at this. My Behavioral EQ report showed I needed to work, especially on listening to both content as well as feelings. My wife validated this and it went to the top of my list of growth strategies.

Once we have an understanding of where we are today (starting point) and where we can be more effective (finish line), we need to create a strategy for getting there. My EQ training program will offer you a few options for modifying behavior. You should start with the path that gives you the best opportunity for success.

The other important factor in successfully changing habits is your desire to make the change. Just like other habit-changing initiatives, we are more inclined to continue the hard work of changing if we see a benefit. Start with a behavioral change that will make the biggest impact on improving others' perception of your Emotional Quotient.

"Eighty- five percent of the reason you get a job, keep a job, and move ahead in that job has to do with People skills and People knowledge." —Cavett Robert

I believe Behavioral Emotional Quotient is an important way to Lead with Love. Behavioral EQ is a key element in treating others with respect, building trust, and showing someone how much you care about them.
